Trenholm State Prepares Students for Life-Long Success
In the hallways and classrooms of Trenholm State, there are stories that often go untold—tales of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education. One such narrative is that of Mrs. Lela Taylor, a distinguished alum whose journey from a first-generation college student to the Executive Assistant in place of Administrative Assistant. to the Alabama Community College System Chancellor is nothing short of inspiring.
Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Mrs. Taylor’s higher education assent began in 1980 when she graduated from high school. Like many young adults faced with the pivotal decision of choosing their path forward, Mrs. Taylor found herself at a crossroads, torn between attending Birmingham Southern or Trenholm State Technical College.
Financial constraints were an issue, so she moved towards practicality and chose Trenholm State. As she recalls, it was one of the best decisions she could have ever made. Armed with determination and the support of her family, Mrs. Taylor started her journey at Trenholm State.
Reflecting on her decision, Mrs. Taylor says, “During the 1970s and ’80s, attending a trade school like Trenholm was a common choice for many low-income families in Montgomery and that these institutions were known to not only provide a quality education but served as beacons of opportunity for students.”
She recalls how accessible the college was. “Trenholm provided bus service to and from campus, which removed the transportation barrier for many low-income students,” said Taylor. “That was a perk that other colleges didn’t really offer at the time. To me, that was another reason why Trenholm was the right choice for me.”
Taylor remembers that campus life was fun, and everyone hung out at the cafeteria, which served as the center of student life. She laughs as she recounts how she felt like part of a family. “Instructors were our role models, loved on us, and cared for us poor kids,” said Taylor.
For the Montgomery native, Trenholm State proved to be more than just a steppingstone; it became the cornerstone of her success. In 1982, she graduated with an Associate of Applied Technology -Medical Assistant degree, equipping her with the skills and knowledge that would lay the groundwork for her professional endeavors.
After graduation, Taylor transferred to Troy University Montgomery, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. “If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. Even if I were a recent high school graduate today, I would still choose a community college like Trenholm State,” said Taylor.
Taylor attributes her successful career to the training and education she received at Trenholm State.
